Coronation Street star John Thompson has dropped a massive spoiler over Gail Platt’s exit storyline – and we can hear wedding bells. It’s no secret that the Platt matriarch will be saying goodbye to Weatherfield before the end of the year.
The decision for Gail to be written out of the ITV soap came after Helen Worth decided to step back from her long-running role after celebrating an incredible 50 years on the cobbles.
The news was announced back in June with Helen, 73, saying: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.
“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”
While it was said that Gail’s exit would air towards the end of 2024, fans were left fearing her exit was coming much sooner after the character was rushed to hospital in scenes aired this week after a row at home with her children left her clutching her chest.
During Wednesday night’s (October 23) Corrie, viewers saw Carla Connor tell Gail’s son David and his partner Shona that she has made on offer on their house after Gail put No.8 up for sale. A row broke out between Jesse Chadwick and Gail’s daughter Sarah and son David before Gail snapped and urged her children to leave the house.
Jesse returned to Weatherfield, after having a brief romance with Gail when the two were in Thailand, and decided to visit her after hearing about the challenges of Gail’s granddaughter Bethany’s botched Turkish cosmetic surgery which left her fighting for her life in hospital.

After Sarah and David left, Jesse was seen hunting for Gail’s granddaughter Lily’s bicycle pump and was shocked by what he found. However, his curiosity disappeared when he noticed Gail breathing unsteadily and clutching her arm, and phoned an ambulance. She was quickly rushed to hospital where she was seen unconscious as doctors declared that she needed urgent medical attention as she went into arrest.
The doctor later said Gail was suffering from a blockage in her left main coronary artery. She confirmed that Gail was stable but that would need an emergency operation to have a stent fitted. While Gail’s family told this would likely go okay, the doctor did warn their could be complications as the surgery comes with its risks.
But it appears Gail is going to recover as John Thomson, who plays Jesse, appeared on This Morning and revealed a shock proposal is on the cards. The actor revealed to show hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary: “Gail is leaving, yeah! So what happens is, I visit Gail in hospital and she’s post cardiac arrest, it’s her second heart attack, and I’m allowed to say this…
“Gail proposes to me! I think it’s a Leap Year, isn’t it? Gail proposes to me but that’s why… I can’t say anymore but she’s heavily medicated so I don’t know if her intentions are true!”
