Coronation Street might just see the return of a beloved character to team up with Steve McDonald and take charge at Street Cars.
The legendary taxi firm has been a mainstay on the show since 2000, originally founded by Steve (played by Simon Gregson) and Weatherfield’s own Vikram Desai (portrayed by Chris Bisson).
Over time, plenty of well-known faces have had stints as drivers, including Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine), Les Battersby-Brown (Bruce Jones) and even Steve’s mum, Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard).
Behind the scenes in dispatch, characters such as Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver), Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly) and even Weatherfield patriarch Ken Barlow (William Roache) have taken shifts behind the desk.
However, last week’s episodes threw current owner Steve into turmoil when his ex-partner Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) declared she wanted half of Street Cars in their divorce.
Tracy’s move came after discovering Steve’s recent fling with Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney), who had a hand in poisoning her father, Ken, earlier this year, reports Leicestershire Live.
In the episode airing Monday, June 30, a fretful Steve mulled over Tracy’s ultimatum.
But swirling speculation amongst Corrie aficionados indicates that a much-loved face from the past could re-emerge to foil Tracy’s plans for the business.
On a busy Coronation Street Facebook fan group, whispers are spreading that Lloyd Mullaney (Craig Charles) could make an unexpected return. A user speculated: “Get Lloyd back to run Street Cars with Steve.” A second fan enthused: “Aw yeah he was ace.”
Joining the chorus of approval, a third viewer remarked: “He might buy Tracy out or something.” Adding to the speculation, another devotee commented: “That would be epic.”
Long-time watchers will remember when Lloyd first hit the cobbles in 2005, quickly cementing his status as a beloved character. He even had his stint at the iconic Street Cars, where he proudly shared the co-owner title with Steve from 2006 till his departure in 2015.
His swansong on the series featured Lloyd cruising in a red Cadillac during the live broadcast on September 23rd, but his final pre-filmed scenes aired in the subsequent episode.
Reflecting on his time at Coronation Street, he shared with the Daily Record: “I will miss all the people, the cast and the crew. I will miss my mates, Steve McDonald – Simon Gregson, I will miss him terribly. We are best mates in real life.”
